Laccaria nobilis Smith and Mueller Cap 2-7.5cm across, convex becoming flatter or occasionally uplifted, depressed, or deeply depressed, with a margin that sometimes becomes wavy; bright reddish orange to brownish orange, occasionally with a darker center; minutely hairy to scaly. Gills sinuate to adnate, close to distant, moderately broad to broad; pinkish flesh-color to orangepink. Stem 25-110x4-l0mm, slightly bulbous; same color as cap, with white mycelium at base; dry, longitudinally hairy, almost forming reticulate ridges, and with recurved scales near the top in mature specimens. Flesh thin; same color as cap. Spores subglobose to broadly ellipsoid, 7.4-9.7 x 6.4-8.7µ. Deposit white. Habitat singly or scattered at high elevations (but below tree line). Found in the Rocky Mountains and westward, and in New Mexico. Season July-November. Edibility not known -avoid.
